What a pleasant, civilized tradition, Jean. We have Black Friday. Some what less traditional and a whole lot less civilized. However, this is the weekend that all the Christmas light go up and that is a nice tradition. The night turns magical.

Hey silver dreams. Poor dog. Glad Jon is giving it a home. I've never understood why people abandon dogs or cats when they run into financial trouble. Giving up a big bag of dry dog or cat food plus table scraps doesn't seem like it would really free up much money.

That was my first thought, considering your Greek ancestry. However, Janet topped me with her Xina, which is more Greek, according to you, so I'm willing to use your native spelling.

Last I looked, however, U.K. subjects and American citizens spoke English. Maybe that doesn't hold true in Maine, where everyone is educated in Latin and Greeek and reads the classics in their original form?

Good Afternoon to all,

Kristina, you'll be so happy when you fit in so well back in your native Greece, as will all those thousands of Greek-born U.K. subjects who still speak in their native tongue. :)
Posted by   ( ) on 26-Nov-09 at 17:00:32 GMT   Listings
It's no use Xina. I tried to point out the same thing . It was not well received. LOL I believe it is thought that those who use the X are quite significantly less Xtian than those who spell it out. Who would have thought that spelling separated the believers from the non believers. LMAO
Posted by   ( ) on 26-Nov-09 at 16:51:45 GMT   Listings
USAGE NOTE Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of Χριστος, "Christ." In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, "Christian." But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ĕksPRIMARY_STRESSməs). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.

Frankie I'm with you on the use of 'xmas.' To me, it's a word that has crept in, to assist in advertising and therefore too commercialised! It seems to be taking Christ, out of Christmas and it's not for me!

Sadly, I think political correctness will travel very fast in your country and there's much more to come for you! Everything was set in place when Mr O became President! God help us all! :o(

I tried chicken that way before backing it, not sure if it did anything really.

Most stove pipe is either 6" or 8". This is a smaller than usual wood cook stove so I suppose that's why it doesn't have standard piping.

Never tried the fried turkeys. #1 son has tried it though and says they are really good. I've done 20 years of wood stove cooking don't know if that makes it more authentic but it does keep the kitchen warm. LOL

Hey I have a stove pipe here, but do not know the size, is 7" uncommon?,,,,and you must be wanting a authentic Thanksgiving cooking with wood!,,,have you had those fried ones? I never had, but sounds intriguing,,and looks interesting with the use of those large turkey fryers.
Posted by   ( ) on 26-Nov-09 at 05:16:51 GMT   Listings
Well we had big plans to get the stove pipe hooked up to the cook stove and cook the turkey at the cabin. Unfortunately we seem to be missing a 7" piece of stove pipe and an adapter. So Thanksgiving at the cabin is out. I'm just hoping 7" stove pipe is available locally. I've never heard of it and I've been around a lot of wood stoves in my life. Plans have been reduced to turkey and trimmings at home.

I do not live 1,000 years ago.

I live NOW and I will stand by my statements below.

Isn't there anyone else around with whom you could pick at argument?

In the interests of relieving the stress of the Christmas season one less thing to fret over is the word Xmas. From Wikipedia:

The word "Christ" and its compounds, including "Christmas", have been abbreviated in English for at least the past 1,000 years, long before the modern "Xmas" was commonly used. "Christ" was often written as "XP" or "Xt"; there are references in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as far back as AD 1021. This X and P arose as the uppercase forms of the Greek letters χ and ρ used in ancient abbreviations for Χριστος (Greek for "Christ"), and are still widely seen in many Eastern Orthodox icons depicting Jesus Christ.

We are being encouraged in the schools to call the coming up break "winter vacation" and use the term "Happy Holidays," as store personnel are now doing.

I will go jobless before I refer to the date celebrated as the birth of Christ anything but Christmas. I will not "x" out Christ by writing "xmas," nor calling this most holy of days, "chrissy" nor any other term which demeans the meaning of the holiday. It is Christmas and I will always respect the day for what it is!

Jon, I truly regret to tell you one of your more dire preictions is coming true here as P.C. gains ground in the U.S.

A county courthouse in the O.C., which has had a Christmas tree in the lobby at this time of year since the building was put up, has had to take that tree down because "someone found it offensive." This is particularly disturbing because Orange County is a traditionally right-wing base of Republican voters. It would seem it's only a matter of time before Christmas is illegal throughout a land founded by Christians on Christian principles. :(

I give good value when i sell my items, they are good quality and I always post within a few days. It really does annoy me ( the polite version of what I wish to say) when people cannot be bothered to give feedback.I always give feedback after purchasing!

ya gotta laff... seller registered for 23 days trying to list 25 items....er no!.. after £12 of listing fees they want your debit card details (just incase)... and they are very quick to start legal action against a member who owes more than £3 for more than 43 days

this place has changed so much!

I have a very huge problem. I got in contact with sellers before I bid and won most items, I asked them if collection was OK, and they agreed. So I won around 25 items in the past week or so. Now the problem is, when I tried to "contact seller" or "ask seller a question" I can't see to contact them to get there addresses!!

I already got one negitive feedback from a seller telling people to avoid!

Help me!

pmsl... that is class! maybe I should write back to my penpals to say I own the Tower Bridge...lol

Na... I dont think they are dumb... they obviously spend every waking hour thinkin of how not to work but gain money.. like some here..lol
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:45:27 GMT   Listings
Do you suppose the guys that run the scams are as dumb as the people that fall for them. Makes you wonder.
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:44:01 GMT   Listings
I once wrote back to one of those nice Nigerian men that were offering me lots and lots of money. I told him that I was willing to sell him the Brooklyn Bridge at a very reasonable price and that he could make millions setting up a toll booth on the on ramp. He actually wrote back and said he didn't understand my offer. OMG too funny.
Posted by   ( )   on 24-Nov-09 at 22:35:56 GMT   Listings
haha!... well they were really nice people with nice photo's. but unfortunately I didnt have the time to write back ; )
Posted by   ( )   on 24-Nov-09 at 22:35:13 GMT   Listings
its sad really... but hey... in the UK we have readers digest that do it all above board.. in the meantime they send you books every month in the hope you will forget to send back then charge you for it and keep sending you invites to 'prize draws' for thousands of pounds with a photo of their recent winner...

still not sure why OFT have never investigated this
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:33:25 GMT   Listings
Do you ever write back to these nice penpals??? LMAO
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:32:08 GMT   Listings
Oh, now there is a scam I hadn't heard of.
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:30:57 GMT   Listings
We recently had one of those scams going in Maine and at least 4 couples actually sent money, fairly substantial sums too and believed they would receive one million free dollars. Just one question occurs to me: how can people that are obviously dumb as a box of rocks accumulate thousands of dollars.
Posted by   ( )   on 24-Nov-09 at 22:27:08 GMT   Listings
lol... I've started getting lots of 'penpal' letters from ladies, just wondering if they know 'pauline' is male or female

their letters may be getting better but the grammar is still bad and obvious : )
Posted by   ( ) on 24-Nov-09 at 22:24:02 GMT   Listings
I've had $2,000,000 transfered to my account by a dying person who has sold an item and accepted a large payment and now they have sent me a check for three million dollars and want me to send them $2,000,000. I'm so excited that will leave $1,000,000 for me. I've made up a list of people I want to buy things for. Would you like to be on my list????

LOL We've gotten all four of those scams. All from Nigeria and all in very bad English. However, they've gotten smarter, lately. They now send out very official looking letters with a law firm letter head saying in very good English and with lots of legalese that we have inherited money etc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
